What is GTO?
GTO (Game Theory Optimal) is a decision framework built to make your strategy hard to exploit. You balance ranges and frequencies (bet / check / call / raise / fold) so opponents cannot print money by adjusting to your habits.
In solver terms, poker becomes an optimization problem: for each spot there are mathematically grounded strategies that maximize long-run EV when the opponent does not leak badly.
Brief history and context
Game theory met poker decades ago; modern solvers (PioSolver and others) made approximate equilibria practical. Online volume plus software pushed GTO from theory into everyday coaching.
How to study GTO — a practical path
1. Preflop charts — RFI, 3-bet, blind defense. Postflop GTO collapses without this base.
2. Think in ranges — yours and theirs, not one hero hand.
3. Simple solver spots — common flops and c-bet policies before multiway chaos.
4. Review — save hands, compare to solver output, adjust.
5. Add exploit later — deviate from baseline only when the leak is clear.
Blockers: a simple, powerful idea
A blocker is a card in your hand that reduces the chance villain holds a specific strong combo. Example: you hold A♣K♥ on J♣9♣8♦ — the A♣ blocks some nut-flush combinations.
Blockers help you bluff more confidently, choose better sizes, and keep bluff/value mixes coherent. They are core to modern postflop GTO thinking.
GTO vs exploit — how to combine them
GTO is your safe baseline — hard to punish systematically.
Exploit means adjusting to a specific leak (for example: they overfold to 3-bets → widen your bluffs).
Strong players keep a solid GTO core and deviate when the opponent is clearly wrong. Pure exploit without a baseline makes you fragile against better regs.
Should you study GTO?
Yes — not as dogma, but as a map. GTO study improves range vision, shows how far you can lean into exploit, and raises long-run win rate when applied with discipline.
Start with preflop and simple postflop nodes; expand when those feel automatic.
