The most important HUD stat: VPIP

HUD users track dozens of numbers, but VPIP comes first. It shows how often a player voluntarily puts money in the pot before the flop.

Read VPIP well and you already know who is loose, who is tight, and where the money is.

What is VPIP?

VPIP stands for Voluntarily Put money In Pot. High VPIP means a wide, loose range; low VPIP means a tight range.

It counts limps, calls, raises, and 3-bets — any voluntary preflop put-in except a fold. Blind posts alone do not count.

Formula and example

In practice:

VPIP = (hands where the player voluntarily put money in) ÷ (hands dealt)

Hands where the Big Blind wins uncontested without a voluntary action are not “voluntary puts.” Blind money that is simply posted does not raise VPIP until the player adds more (call/raise) or voluntarily puts in elsewhere.

Example: 20 voluntary puts in 100 hands → VPIP 20%.

VPIP on the blinds: “voluntary” is the key word

A blind is a forced bet. It does not count toward VPIP unless the player takes an extra voluntary action.

Small Blind (SB): folds without adding more → that hand is not a VPIP hand.

Big Blind (BB): everyone limps and BB checks → not a VPIP hand.

BB calls or raises: adding chips voluntarily → counts as a VPIP hand.

Note: postflop bets after a free BB check do not rewrite the preflop VPIP definition — VPIP is a preflop stat. Trackers score the preflop action only.

Player type by VPIP

VPIP is the backbone of opponent classification. Prefer 2,000–3,000+ hands before trusting a label.

6-max guide (approximate):

> 40% — Fish / Maniac: enters far too often, often weak
28–40% — Loose / LAG: wide range; fight with 3-bets and discipline
18–26% — TAG: solid default for most games
< 16% — Nit: only strong cards; steal often, fold to heat

6-max vs full ring

The same player shows a higher VPIP at 6-max than at full ring. A solid TAG might sit near ~15% full ring and ~20% at 6-max. Always compare like with like.

Important: under ~2,000 hands, VPIP can mislead. Wait for a real sample.

How to use VPIP

VPIP updates every hand and quickly answers: how loose is this seat?

• Estimate range strength more accurately
• Choose better exploit lines
• Pair it with PFR (and 3-bet) to separate passive fish from LAGs
