Texas Hold'em Rules: From Robstown Saloons to the World's Main Game

Texas Hold'em (No-Limit Hold'em, NLH) is the world's most popular poker variant and arguably the most popular card game overall. Its appeal combines simple rules with deep strategy.
In NLH each player tries to make the strongest five-card hand using two hole cards and/or five community cards on the table.
Game flow and betting rounds
Play moves clockwise using a standard 52-card deck. Two to ten players can sit at the table.
1. Forced bets
Before the hand, two players post forced bets to seed the pot:
- Small Blind (SB): player left of the Dealer (Button) posts the smaller amount.
- Big Blind (BB): next player posts the larger amount, usually double SB. (With only two players, the Dealer always posts the Big Blind.)
2. Dealing (preflop)
Each player receives two closed hole cards. First betting round begins:
- Action starts: player left of the Big Blind.
- Options: fold, call (match BB), or raise.
3. Flop (three community cards)
After preflop betting is complete the dealer reveals the first three community cards.
- Second betting round: starts with first active player left of the dealer. Players can check, bet, call/raise/fold.
4. Turn (fourth card)
The fourth community card is dealt.
- Third betting round: check, bet, raise, or fold.
5. River (fifth card)
The fifth and final community card is dealt. Players now have all seven cards for their best hand.
- Final betting round.
6. Showdown
If two or more players remain after betting, they show cards and make five-card hands. The strongest hand wins the pot.
Hand rankings (strongest to weakest)
Victory depends on the best five-card hand from any five of the seven available cards.

| Royal flush | Five consecutive cards of one suit from Ten to Ace. |
| Straight flush | Five consecutive cards of one suit. |
| Four of a kind | Four cards of the same rank. |
| Full house | Three cards of one rank and two of another. |
| Flush | Five cards of one suit (not necessarily consecutive). |
| Straight | Five consecutive cards of mixed suits. |
| Three of a kind (set) | Three cards of the same rank. |
| Two pair | Two different pairs. |
| Pair | Two cards of the same rank. |
| High card | No made hand — winner decided by highest card. |
Key actions and terms (beginner glossary)
In NLH you always have a limited set of actions on your turn:

| Pass | Check | Pass action when no bet was made before you. |
| Match | Call | Match the current bet to stay in the hand. |
| Raise | Raise | Increase the previous bet — the most aggressive tool. |
A bit of history: why is NLH so popular?
Texas Hold'em, originally just «Holdem», began in Robstown, Texas in the early 1900s.
- Strategic depth: four betting rounds (vs two in Draw Poker) made it a «thinking man's game» and attracted skill over luck.
- Move to Las Vegas: in 1963 poker legends including Doyle Brunson brought it to Vegas.
- Grand tournament: the turning point was running the main event of the future World Series of Poker as No-Limit Texas Hold'em. No-limit play — betting all chips anytime — raised drama and TV appeal.
Recognition of Hold'em as a game of skill in 1988 cemented its status as the world's leading intellectual card contest.
