Position is the only factor in poker that does not depend on cards. You can get pocket aces from UTG and still play worse than 7♠6♠ on the button. Why? Because position determines how much information you have before acting. Here is every seat at a 6-max table and how to use it at NUTS.

What is position in poker
Position is your seat relative to the dealer (button). The player who acts last postflop has a positional advantage: they see everyone else's actions before deciding.
- UTG — first to act, tightest range
- MP — middle position
- CO — cutoff, wider ranges
- BTN — best seat, last postflop
- SB / BB — blinds, often out of position postflop
Why the button wins
- See all folds before you — steal wider
- Act last on flop, turn, river
- Control pot size: check-back, thin value, river bluffs
- More +EV decisions from information
Regs win 2–3× more bb/100 on the button than from UTG. See starting hands and GTO at NUTS.
Postflop: IP vs OOP
In position (IP): check-back, thin value, river bluffs after opponent checks, float flops.
Out of position (OOP): check-raise strong hands, check-fold weak ones, bluff less.
Read opponents by player type and seat together.
